Pie Lies
She loved pumpkin pie.
A lot.
More than most.
They were filled with love.
The were filled with happiness.
They WERE happiness.
Today was Thanksgiving.
Usually her parents got the pie.
Today, she decided to come.
She bounded in to the store.
She was excited to get the pie.
She stopped.
She saw fifty pumpkin pies.
All sitting on top of each other.
In cheap plastic containers.
These were not filled with love.
These were not filled with happiness.
These were not happiness.
She never tasted pumpkin pie the same way again.

Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving
By Cynthia Fredrick
Grateful for the pouring rain
Falling down on all the plane
Happy for the forest deep
Circling ‘bout the deer that leap
I love the wild running river
So cold it gives all a shiver
I’m thankful for the lilies white,
Who bless and grace those in their sight
Glad to see the mountains wide
As I’m standing by their side
Grateful for the bells that ring
Calling all the choir to sing
Satisfied with this dinner, vast
That calls to all to break their fast
Pilgrims sailed for miles to be
Nothing less than simply free
To see every kind of bird and beast
And have a great big turkey feast!

If you can read this, you can do arithmetic
“I can’t read!” I bet that’s something you don’t hear people say often. Everyone has enough knowledge of the English language to string together a text message. So why is it acceptable to suck at math? More importantly, why is it acceptable to suck at arithmetic?
Recently, I found myself in a classroom full of Grade 12 students. I wrote a simple, two-digit multiplication problem on the blackboard and asked who could solve the equation without the aid of a calculator. In a class of almost 30, only a few students raised their hands. Not only was this disappointing, but it was somewhat frightening too, bec

Bitter taste
I wonder, he said,
with the oddest smile,
a strange little grin.
How do bullets taste?
like relief? Like sin?
He gripped the barrel
in-between his teeth
hugged the trigger tight,
and the gun did sing!
Out with the torture!
Out with the sorrow!
Wipe it all away!
His body lay still,
not a sound was made,
Was it worth the taste?

Based on an experience I had. I thought today would be the perfect day to post it.
I literally stopped in my tracks that day. Thanksgiving is such a wonderful time, filled with love. One of the most important parts is the pumpkin pie. It brings people together. But, that day, when I saw all those pies just tossed on that table without a single care in the world, it filled me with such sorrow...
*sigh* the human race...
